Equipment for the power plant under construction in Montecristi became the first arrival to the newly expanded Manzanillo Bay Port in Montecristi province on the northwesternmost tip of the country. A first ship docked on Friday, 19 January and two others on Saturday, 20 January 2024, bringing the first major components of the new Manzanillo electric power generation plant. The Manzanillo Power Land 414 MW plant is being installed by the private Dominican consortium, Energía 2000 S.A.
Construction on the port kicked off in August 2023. The capacity of the old port was expanded and a new dock was built to facilitate cargo operations at the deep water Manzanillo Port.
Intercoastal Marine Inc. of Panama has built the new port facilities that will be used to unload materials and equipment for the development and supply of the power generators under construction. The dock was installed parallel to the position where a future dock will be built dedicated to receiving liquefied natural gas at the Manzanillo Port. The new port is a US$10.5 million investment.
Intercoastal Marine Inc. is the leading marine contractor in Panama, Central America and the Caribbean. Based in Panama, the company carries out a complete range of design and engineering, new construction, repair, modernization and maintenance of marine structures and facilities.
The combined cycle thermoelectric plant will eventually produce 414 MW, operating with liquefied natural gas designed by Siemens-Energy, and is part of the energy complex being developed in Montecristi.
Energía 2000 S.A. consortium notes that the power plant, Manzanillo Power Land, is a milestone in the region’s energy development and is part of the government’s strategy to respond to the growing demand for electricity.
The modern, state-of-the-art power plant includes a unit for recovering the heat that emanates from the generation of electricity to use it in a second process to produce more energy.
