Tragedy in Piantini

The National Forensic Sciences Institute is carrying out the autopsies of young woman Adelle Ruiz León and her two-month-old baby daughter, who died on Sunday, 21 January 2024, of chemical intoxication they experienced in their 8th-floor Torre da Silva, a high-rise on Federico Gerardino Street in upscale Piantini neighborhood. Preliminary investigation revealed the gases would have come from an apartment that was fumigated in the building.

First to get sick was the woman’s husband, Luis Jose Acra, who thought the sushi he had eaten had affected him and went to a nearby hospital and then returned home.

Shortly after his wife and children also fell ill and had to be hospitalized.

News reports are that Acra and his two-year old child are recovering.

A preliminary Police investigation found traces of aluminum phosphide in another apartment in the building. Aluminium phosphide is a highly toxic chemical used as an insecticide and fumigant. Wikipedia explains the chemical is highly poisonous and has been used for suicide. Fumigation has also caused unintentional deaths. There is no antidote to the toxic chemical.

The Police and firefighters are investigating whether an individual or a company applied the chemical.

Firefighters evacuated all residents in the building.

Diario Libre reported there have been previous deaths for fumigation reported in 2013 and 2015.
