Participacion Ciudadana says new DNI would act in contradiction with prosecutors

The civic society watchdog group, Participacion Ciudadana has joined those who object Law 1-24 that creates the National Intelligence Agency (DNI). PC says that the roles of the Attorney General and that of the DNI need to be conciliated. If not, evidence secured by the DNI would not be able to be used in court when accusing a person. Law 1-24 was enacted as a tool to combat crime and improve national security. Those who oppose the law say it awards ambiguous discretionary powers. The Chamber of Deputies removed the requirement that a judge authorize the obligation to provide information made to citizens.

The bill was expeditely passed on 29 December. Now legislators claim they did not read what they were passing, in the rush to close the session.

The amended bill passed on 10 January 2024 in two readings in the Senate. The bill was the first to be enacted in January 2024.
