Promoting sports tourism to the Dominican Republic

The success of several bubbles held at resorts in the Dominican Republic during the difficult Covid-19 pandemic months in 2020 and 2021 has pushed sports tourism to the forefront of private business people and government.

During the Fitur travel fair in Madrid, Spain (24-28 January 2024), the country presented the Dominican sports tourism strategy and the creation of the Public-Private Sports Tourism Committee. The committee will work to launch several new projects, including the Dominican House for the Paris 2024 Games, in coordination with the Creating Olympic Dreams (CRESO), the privately-funded athlete sponsorship organization.

Tourism Minister David Collado highlighted in Madrid that the Dominican Republic is more than sun and sand. As the country diversifies its offering, sports tourism is identified as a strategic axis to grow the number of visitors and international visibility of the Dominican Republic.

Committee members are Felipe Vicini, president of CRESO, Luis Mejía, member of the International Olympic Committee, José Monegro, president of the Santo Domingo 2026 Organizing Committee and David Llibre, president of the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores).

Collado explained that the role of the Sports Tourism Committee is to identify opportunities for sporting events in the country, as well as international events in which Dominican athletes can participate to strengthen the country brand.

Present for the launching of the new sports tourism strategies was two-time gold medal winner Felix Sanchez and Olympian Adeury Corniel (kite surfing).
