Tigres del Licey wins baseball championship; ready for Caribbean Series

The Tigres del Licey, the capital city team, defeated the Estrellas Orientales 3-2 on Saturday, 27 January 2024 playing the seventh game of the playoffs in San Pedro de Macoris, home city for the Estrellas.

The Most Valuable Player was Gustavo Núñez. Credit for the win is also given to Emilio Bonifacio, the captain of the Licey.

The Licey Tigers lost the first two games of the playoffs, but then recovered to games 3, 4 and 5, losing game six to the Estrellas, but then winning the decisive seventh game.

The Licey was the defending champion into the 2023-2024 championship and is now the local team to have won the most championships. The Licey has won 24 compared to the 22 of the Aguilas Cibaeñas.

At only 31 years old, Manager Gilbert Gomez became the youngest to win the pennant in the Dominican Professional Winter Baseball Championship.

The Licey is also the defending champion for the Caribbean Series this year to be played in Miami, Florida. The 25 games of the Caribbean Series will be played at Miami’s LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, from 1 to 9 February 2024.

The Licey Tigers have won 11 Caribbean Series pennants, more than any other team participating in the regional competition.

The Caribbean Series, usually played between Venezuela, Mexico, the DR and Puerto Rico this 2024 is expanded to include Curacao, Nicaragua and Panama.

The revamped tournament schedule now consists of three games daily, with one team resting daily. The intention is to deliver more intense and balanced competition.

After the group stage, the top four teams advance to the semifinals, thus determining the teams that will compete in the final and third place.
