How does the DR measure up on the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2023?

180 countries are included in the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2023. The Dominican Republic is one of only two countries that improved its perception in the Americas.

Transparency International released the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) on 30 January 2024 in Berlin, Germany. The Index shows that most countries have made little to no progress in tackling public sector corruption. Lack of independence of judiciary fosters impunity for the corrupt and powerful

When focusing on the Americas, the CPI reveals that the judiciary in the Americas is failing to fulfill its crucial role as a check on other branches of government.

The lack of judicial independence undermines the rule of law, promoting corruption and impunity for the corrupt and powerful. With the region’s average score holding at 43 and two-thirds of countries ranking below 50, addressing this issue is imperative for the effective fight against corruption.

The Dominican Republic scored 35, improving its CPI score over the past decade. Also improving was Guyana (40). Other countries have either stagnated or significantly declined.
Haiti scored 17 as the second most corrupt country in the Caribbean and second most corrupt in the Americas behind Nicaragua.

The report lists Venezuela as the most corrupt country in the Americas.

The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is the leading global indicator of public sector corruption, providing an annual comparative snapshot of 180 countries and territories.

Data is compiled based on perceptions of public sector corruption, from 13 external sources, including the World Bank, World Economic Forum, private risk and consulting companies, think tanks and others. The scores reflect the views of experts and business people, not the public.
