An editorial in Diario Libre presses the incongruency in official statistics regarding Haitian migrants.
According to the Migration Agency (DGM), half a million undocumented Haitians were deported in 2023 from the Dominican Republic.
Diario Libre observes: “The data is striking, if we take into consideration that the National Immigrant Survey, in 2017, estimated 497 thousand people born in Haiti, 4.9% of the total DR population. According to these figures, the country was left without Haitian nationals. Who to believe?”
The DGM did not indicate the number of undocumented Haitians that entered in 2023 or estimates for that year. The border between both countries is more than 300 km and is monitored only at select gateway points.
