The Dominican Republic’s team, the Licey Tigers, lost a first game in the Caribbean Series to Venezuela (3-1) but then got into the flow and came back to win the next two games against Nicaragua (5-4) and Puerto Rico (5-2).
The Caribbean Series is being played at the Miami Marlins stadium in Miami Florida. The idea is to bring the Caribbean Series to different Mayor League ball parks across the United States, David Venn writes for MLB.
If anyone thought it was going to be an easy win for the Licey Tigers, the tough competition in the Caribbean Series proved them wrong. Team DR would then lose to the Naranjeros of Mexico (9-1). Mexico, while not in the top four, still has a chance to make the semi-finals.
The game on Friday against Nicaragua was exciting for Dominicans because the team came from behind thanks to two home runs in the eighth inning of the game.
On Saturday, 3 February, the Licey Tigers defeated the Criollos de Caguas of Puerto Rico 5-2. Cesar Valdez pitched five good innings at the LoanDepot Park in Miami. The DR vs PR game set a Caribbean Series record in attendance at the Miami ballpark.
The DR team resumes games on Tuesday, 6 February. The Tigres del Licey have yet to match Curacao and Panama in the group stage. After the group stage, the top four teams advance to the semifinals, thus determining the teams that will compete in the final and third place. As of Sunday, 4 February, the DR was in the four top teams, with Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, but nothing is decided yet.
The Licey Tigers team has won 11 Caribbean Series championships for the Dominican Republic, more than any other team. Licey won in 1971, 1973, 1977, 1980, 1985, 1991, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, and 2023.
