Bridge debris blamed for death of red mangroves in Samana

The Ministry of Environment concluded that the debris of a bridge built across mangroves area disrupted the flow of salt water resulting in the demise of many of the environmentally important sea shrubs in the northern beach area near El Limon in Samana. There had been speculation the area had been sprayed with glyphosate to accelerate their death so the land could be developed for tourism.

The Deputy Minister of Coastal and Marine Matters at the Ministry of Environment, José Ramón Reyes López said that 223 tareas (1 tarea – 629 square meters) in the El Estillero wetland in northern Samaná were affected by a series of environmental impacts that included the construction and destruction of a bridge whose debris altered the flow of the tide and consequently the entry of salt sea water necessary for the well being of the red mangroves swamp in La Barbacoa, de El Limón, Samaná.
