During his rendition of accounts speech, President Luis Abinader announced a tram is in the books to connect the Independence Avenue with the subway rides on John F Kennedy Avenue in the capital city.
President Luis Abinader said the Av. Winston Churchill tram is included in the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System (SIT) and a private partner is sought. A tender would be held to establish a public-private partnership for the construction and operation. At present, there is only a mass transit north-south connection on Av. Maximo Gomez.
The Av. Winston Churchill tram would connect to the Haina-San Cristobal train and with the Santo Domingo urban train that would go east on 27 de Febrero connecting to Las Americas International Airport. This project was announced last year and has yet to be tendered.
The President announced that the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System (SIT) already has the resources to begin in the first quarter of this year the tender for the Santo Domingo West cable car that will run from Km 9 to Haina. He said that this mass transit service is part of five components that make up the SIT. Others are the Winston Churchill Avenue tram, the Haina-San Cristóbal train, that is under design, and the Santo Domingo urban train that will be developed as a public-private partnership.
Noticias SIN highlights that the Santo Domingo Tram will be built on rails and will have the capacity to transport 7,000 to 10,000 people per hour. The system will travel from the Sanchez Highway in Haina, connecting with the Santo Domingo West Cable Car, crossing the entire East-West Independencia Avenue, going north on the Av. Winston Churchill Avenue, to integrate with lines 1 and 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro.
The project calls for the construction of a tunnel under Av. Winston Churchill for the passage of the trams, considerably reducing traffic congestion in the city center. The government said the tram would cost US$300 million.
