A tall ship in Santo Domingo from 4-9 March

One of the world’s most famous sailing ships, the Juan Sebastian de Elcano, is scheduled to dock at Punta Torrecilla (at the mouth of the Ozama River), on Monday, 4 March 2024. The high-masted Spanish tall ship will remain in port until 9 March and will receive visitors on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The visit is part of the seven-month training cruise for 240 young crew about to enter service in the Spanish Navy and for sea cadets.

Visitors taking the free tour can see for themselves how life is at sea for the 240 who live and train on the ship in such a confined space.

The Juan Sebastian de Elcano is a very well-known, four-masted sailing vessel that has participated in tall ship events around the world. The ship at 113 meters is the third largest tall ship in the world. Built in 1927, the Elcano was named after the Spanish explorer who completed Ferdinand Magellan’s first-ever circumnavigation of the earth from 1519 to 1522.

The 82 midshipmen that make up the crew of the Elcano will finish their training in July 2024.

The ship left the port city of Cadiz in the south of Spain in early January. It will visit six countries in the Americas and then return to Spain at the end of July.
