Two men were sent to preventive custody at the start of the trial for the murder of 23-year old Paula Santana Escalante, an employee in the Las Americas Free Zone export park in eastern Santo Domingo. Her corpse was found on 21 February 2024 in a sewage drain in the installations of Oscor Caribe, LLC (Integer Holdings Corp) where she was employed. The Ministry of Labor fined the company for incurring in serious security and public health faults related to the case.
The corpse showed signs the deceased had been raped and strangled.
Judge Karen Casado Minyety sent 38-year old Joaquin Alexander Hidalgo Marte and 23 year old Alex Elvin Cruz Diaz to the San Pedro de Macoris jail as the case is being investigated.
