The first National District debate was held successfully on Monday, 4 March 2024 and transmitted by RTVD and several other TV, radio and online channels.
For the first time, the five contenders for the position appeared together to air their views and present their most important projects.
The debate, in which minority and majority party candidates received the same time and space to make their presentations, made it possible for small-party candidates to become known to the general public.
Those watching the debate certainly were impressed by Eric Ortiz, of the minority party Opcion Democratica, as he took on the big players such as Guillermo Moreno, running for the ruling PRM and his own Alianza Pais, and deputy Omar Fernandez, running for the People’s Force of his father Leonel Fernandez and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), of former President Danilo Medina. Others presenting were former deputy Vinicio Castillo and lawyer Carlos Rubio Martinez.
The debate maintained a high level and candidates were innovative in presenting bills they would work on if elected senator for the capital city in the vote on 19 May 2024.
