Was it a slip, blooper or wishful thinking? Pacheco promotes Omar Fernandez to senator

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, referred to present Fuerza del Pueblo deputy Omar Fernandez, the son of former Presiddent Leonel Fernandez who is running for senator for the National District, as “senator” instead of deputy.

When mentioning Fernandez in a work session in the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco addressed him as “honorable senator” instead of honorable deputy.

Pacheco’s party, the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is backing minority party politician Guillermo Moreno for senator. His main contender is Omar Fernandez who is running for a coalition of Opcion Democratica, Fuerza del Pueblo, Dominican Liberation Party and Dominican Revolutionary Party.

When opening the work session on Monday, 4 March 2024, Alfredo Pacheco mentioned Fernández as “honorable senator” and, immediately, retracted himself, with a smile.

“We are aware of the bill that creates the trust for the comprehensive management of storm drainage in the National District, an initiative of the honorable senator, deputy, I was wrong, Omar Fernández Domínguez,” he expressed.

The project seeks to address the flooding problem in the capital by building drainage through a trust.

This proposal is part of the initiatives of Omar Fernández and Domingo Contreras, who ran for mayor of the capital city but lost to incumbent Carolina Mejia of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
