The National Young Entrepreneurs Association (ANJE) announced the presidential debates on Wednesday, 24 April 2024 at the Horacio Alvarez Saviñon auditorium of the Pedro Henriquez University (Unphu) from 8 to 10pm.
ANJE, nevertheless, is limiting the participation to those who represent political parties that in the 2020 election received at least 5% of the vote. This limits the debate to President Luis Abinader for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Santiago Mayor Abel Martinez, who is running for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and Leonel Fernandez, the candidate for the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP). Leonel Fernandez is a three-term President who won these for the PLD.
Minority party presidential candidates Virginia Antares Rodriguez of Opción Democrática and Maria Teresa Cabrera of Frente Amplio protested the discrimination.
Previous mayor and congressional debates organized by CODESSD had included all the candidates.
Two days before the presidential debate, on Monday, 22 April, the ANJE senatorial debate will be held with the candidates from the National District and Santiago, also at the same venue and time. Anje is also limiting participation in the senate and deputy debates to the same three political parties (PRM, PLD and FP) that received 5% of the vote.
The intention is to focus the debates on the candidates that have the highest changes of winning.
