Light manufacturing in export zones, and cigar and rum production, and now medical tourism and sports tourism, good restaurants and bars are key to the continued development of the centrally-located province of Santiago.
President Luis Abinader was in Santiago on Monday, 18 March 2024 for the launching of the city’s Santiago Tourist Bureau and the Visit Santiago promotions.
Speaking during the event to present the Santiago Tourist Bureau and the Visit Santiago promotional campaigns, President Luis Abinader highlighted how the city concentrates “the best private health infrastructure in the country”.
President Luis Abinader spoke of Santiago’s institutional strength as region promoters move forward Santiago’s tourism development strategy. “Tourism today is about telling success stories; there is a lot of wealth to draw from,” said the President about the development of Santiago industries and their history, such as tobacco, rum, and health industries.
Our vision of the future is a large metropolitan area of Santiago linked to Puerto Plata by the Amber Highway, just 30 minutes away. And we have Manzanillo [130 km away to the northwest) as a large logistics and port center, Abinader highlighted as another major industrial conglomerate in the Cibao region.
Likewise, the President announced the creation of a museum to honor Don Alejandro Grullón, founder of the Banco Popular Dominicano and a major supporter of Santiago’s development, in the current Santiago post office building, located on San Luis Street on the corner of Calle del Sol in the historic center of Santiago.
President Luis Abinader also mentioned the government is studying the construction of an amphitheater where the San Luis Fortress is located in the city center. The amphitheater would enable major shows to be regularly presented for the entertainment of the people of Santiago and visitors.
Santiago will host several games for the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup at the Cibao FC Stadium from 16 October to 3 November 2024. This is the first time the Dominican Republic will host a world class soccer tournament with competitors coming from all around the world.
