UN urges DR to accept more Haitian refugees; Chamber of Deputies calls for attacking root causes of violence in Haiti

Not much is new with Haiti. Violence continues in the streets of Port-au-Prince, talks continue as people In and outside Haiti scramble to decide who to name to the transitional council, evacuations of foreigners continue, and the UN refugee agency, UNHRC and others continue to pressure the Dominican Republic to legally accept refugees.

The Dominican Republic has a 391 km border with Haiti. The country has built a 50 km fence to mitigate cattle and vehicle robberies, contraband in general and migration. The DR spends heavily on patrols at the border and at the same time dedicates a third of its budget to provide free health services to Haitians. The country also has the largest population of undocumented and documented Haitians outside of Haiti. This is in addition to billions spent for low cost education for Haitian migrants here.

In Santo Domingo, the Chamber of Deputies issued a resolution asking the UN to instead attack the root causes of the multidimensional crisis in Haiti. According to the deputies, international entities must collaborate in the face of the situation that overwhelms the Haitian people and “deepen and attack the root of the internal situation in said territory.”
