US citizen arrested in DR accused of murdering three women in Honduras

US citizen Gilbert Reyes Bermudez was arrested in the Dominican Republic in response to an Interpol red notice. Reyes is the main suspect of the murder on 7 January 2024 of three young women in Roatan, a popular tourist destination in the Islas de la Bahia in Honduras. Honduras has the highest femicide rate in Latin America and the fifth highest in the world (6.47 per 100,000 women).

As reported in The Tico Times, the Public Ministry of Honduras, in a statement, revealed that Reyes Bermudez was apprehended by Dominican authorities after fleeing Honduras in the wake of the murders.

As reported, the victims, identified as María Antonia Cruz, Nikendra McCoy, and Dione Solórzano, who was Reyes’ former spouse, had reportedly gone out with the American on 6 January 2024. The following day, Reyes fled the country, and the women were reported missing. The bodies of the women were found on 9 January with gunshot wounds in a vehicle.

Honduran prosecutors and police gathered substantial evidence from the crime scene and witness testimonies that incriminate Reyes Bermudez. The authorities said he first returned to the United States and from there moved to the Dominican Republic. Honduras authorities seek the extradition of Reyes Bermudez from the Dominican Republic.
