Dominican taekwondo athletes Bernardo Pie (68 kilos) and Madelyn Rodríguez (-67 kilos) made the cut during the 2024 Taekwondo Olympic Continental Qualifier taking place at the Volleyball Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in Santo Domingo. Both defeated Chileans 2-0 to win the right to compete in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. They are the 41st and 42nd athlete to make the Dominican Olympic team.
This will be the second time Bernardo Pie competes in an Olympic Games. He had competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics that was held in 2021. His brother, Luis Pie won bronze in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
This will be Madelyn Rodríguez’s first Olympic Games participation.
Athletes from the Pan-American countries, including North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, are competing for sixteen quotas in the 9-10 April 2024 Santo Domingo qualifier.
The qualifier will be followed up by the Dominican Taekwondo Open on 11-14 April 2024 at the same venue. Competitions will be in the Kyorugui and Poomsae, in the cadet, junior and senior categories.
Both the Olympic Qualifier and the Dominican Open are organized by the Dominican Taekwondo Federation, under Miguel Camacho, brother of Dominican Minister of Sports Francisco Camacho.
