Authorities crack down on drug traffickers operating in southern provinces

Phase II of Operacion Cayman was begun on 10 April 2024 by the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), and with the support of the Attorney General Office, the Ministry of Defense and agencies of the United States government, the DNCD reports.

Working with the United States Anti-Drug Agency (DEA) and the United States Southern Command of North America, Dominican law enforcement agencies deployed air, sea and land resources in several provinces along the country’s south coast and in East Santo Domingo to crack down on organized crime structures. The DNCD has reported seizing around six tons of cocaine in recent months, half in the southern Peravia province.

As part of Operacion Cayman, that was begun on 10 April 2024 at 4am, the Public Ministry (Attorney General Office) and the National Drug Control Agency carried out 38 raids in locations in San Juan de la Maguana, Barahona, Baní, Pedernales and Santo Domingo Este, on the south coast of the country. 481 members of the DNCD and the Armed Forces, together with more than 40 prosecutors participated, the DNCD reported.

The DNCD said cutting-edge technology was used and the exhaustive investigation has enabled the drafting of a comprehensive map on how the transnational criminal organizations operate. The modern investigation techniques that have resulted in significant seizures since Phase I of the Operacion Cayman began in January 2023.

The DNCD reported that four aircraft were deployed to reach difficult locations. Four Navy vessels were also deployed, one of them to reach Isla Beata.

The DNCD reported more than 15 arrests were made and numerous seizures of weapons, money and other evidence were made as part of Phase II of Operacion Cayman. At present the teams are processing the raids and other investigative procedures.

The event carried out to crack down on international criminal drug trafficking organizations that are using the south of the Dominican Republic for the trafficking of cocaine. The centrally-located DR is a transshipment point for drugs to the United States and Europe.
