PUCMM opens lab for soils studies

The Pontifical Catholic University of Madre y Maestra reopened its Soil Mechanics Laboratory at its Santo Domingo campus. The lab will offer services to engineering firms, and contribute to improved constructions and avoid damages in cases of earthquakes and landslides. The Dominican Republic is located on a major Caribbean fault.

Engineer Manuel Estrella, a PUCMM graduate, donated the lab equipment after his Grupo Estrella renovated the leading construction company’s facilities with new equipment.

During the event, engineer Estrella stated the PUCMM Soil Mechanics Laboratory should “become the best laboratory in any university at the moment.”

Estrella said this soil analysis center will enable field services and research.

The lab is equipped to carry out tests of Triaxial Compression, Direct Shear, Simple Compression and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) that are essential to determine the geotechnical behavior of the different types of soils existing in the country. The tests are aimed at strengthening the development of knowledge in the field of geotechnics, foundation and pavement engineering.
