The Technology Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec) announced it has signed an alliance with Coursera to offer free online courses to its community. The courses are part of continued actions on behalf of the university to strengthen its virtual education modality.

Intec Rector Julio Sánchez Maríñez and Dorota Zawistowska-Ford, leader of Coursera for Central America, the Caribbean and South America signed the agreement. The online platform will enable students, teachers and collaborators of this university to access more than 3,000 courses in different areas of knowledge, promoting the development of essential skills for success in this era of digital transformation.

Coursera is a first-class platform that offers a transformative learning experience. It is open to students, teachers and Intec collaborators and seeks to enable these to improve, progress in their work while stimulating a positive change in the development of their careers.

Coursera students can interact with leading instructors while progressing at their own pace with short sessions. Those completing the courses obtain accredited university certificates.

Taveras noted that Intec’s instructional design is a systematic focus for creating effective and efficient learning experiences. “This involves planning, application of pedagogical principles, development of educational materials, selection of technologies, construction of appropriate evaluation methods, interaction strategies; all aligned with the skills and paths of the hoped-for learnings shaped in the academic program of the award based on curricular development”.

The alliance with Coursera is a follow-up to teacher training in the 100% virtual instructional design based on Quality Matters standards (QM) already taking place at the capital city university. At the moment more than 80 entries have been rolled out specifically designed for virtual environments since 2022. “This year we have committed to carrying out the instructional design of 25 courses more that meet the QM standard of quality,” Taveras indicated in a press release from the university.

“Our goal is the development of a quality online teaching model intimately aligned with the demands of the current world that fosters a flexible, interactive and collaborative learning environment in a way that students can have an enriching educational experience that transcends physical limitations, expressed Intec rector Taveras.
