After inspection rounds, Minister of Public Works Deligne Ascensión told Listin Diario the 19.60 Avenida Circunvalación de Bani is on schedule to be completed by November or December 2024. Ascención said he saw for himself that works are 90% completed.
The bypass will significantly reduce driving time between Santo Domingo and Barahona. At present, it can take up to an hour to drive through the contested city of Baní. The Azua bypass was finished during the Abinader administration but is already in operation. The Baní bypass is the missing link to reduce driving time from Santo Domingo to Barahona to two hours. The works have been contracted to Ecosisa and Compañía Estrella.
With great optimism, Minister Deligne Ascensión promises the Circunvalación de Bani is on schedule to open in November to December. Listin Diario article on the highway, says this is just another of many times that the Minister of Public Works announces a date for the completion of the bypass road.
Work on the Circunvalación de Baní began in November 2020. At the time, the Ministry announced work would be completed by September 2021. The date was then moved to 2022 and then to 2023.
“Finally, we are seeing the light at the end of the road,” he said.
Most of the traffic that passes through the center of Bani is making its way through, either going east to San Cristobal and Santo Domingo, or west to Azua or Barahona. The bypass will enable the traffic to flow, encouraging increased development in the area.
