Abinader returns from work-vacation in Europe

President Luis Abinader is back in the Dominican Republic since Saturday, 1 June 2024. The President flew into San Isidro Air Force Base in Santo Domingo East. He was met by the Minister of Defense and the chiefs of staff of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Abinader spent about a week in Europe (24 May to 1 June), had meetings at the Vatican See, including a private meeting with Pope Francisco, and with the presidents of Italy and Portugal.

Pope Francisco congratulated President Abinader on his re-election and discussed international and local matters during the private meeting. While in Italy, Abinader met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and invited him to attend his swearing ceremony on 16 August 2024. The two leaders talked about the possibility of having direct flights from different parts of Italy to the Dominican Republic and a stronger commercial and tourism partnership. Abinader called for opening doors to more Dominican migration in Italy. Italy, like so any other European countries, has an aging population, and fewer and fewer young people.

In Portugal, President Abinader met with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. President Rebelo de Sousa invited Abinader to participate in the Ukrainian Peace Conference scheduled to begin in Switzerland in June. Also on the agenda were discussions on government programs to reduce bureaucracy in government administration.
