Saturday Night Live star comedian, Dominican Marcello Hernandez told his story for Dominican audiences on Esta Noche con Mariasela talk show. He recently did his stuff for Dominican audiences, starring in four sold-out nights at the Hard Rock Cafe in Santo Domingo.
The 26-year old stand up comedian is a son of a Dominican father and a Cuban mother. When growing up in Miami, his father sent him to vacation with his many cousins in the Dominican Republic several times every year. He played soccer and even made the Dominican soccer youth team. He was here enough time to pick up the Dominican accent.
During the interview, he explained he was a champion soccer player in school in Miami, and was always very verbacious, making people laugh in school. He got an inkling he could have a career in acting after winning a drama contest in Florida. His teacher had told him to memorize two monologues and that’s what he did, winning the drama contest. To please his mom, he subsequently studied communications and marketing at a college in Ohio, but commuted to New York where he sold tickets and performed for five or six minutes at a time as a stand up as he tried to make it as a comedian.
He got caught in New York when Covid-19 took that city over and relocated back to Miami to live with his mom. In Miami, he moved in with his father, when he couldn’t convince his mom and sister to take the pandemic serious.
His communications college skills would work in his favor when he little by little got breaks and started writing scripts using his bilingual language skills. He uploaded some of his skits to Tik Tok and these quickly went viral starting his career as a comedian.
He said Tim Dillon, a US comedian, gave him his break when he allowed him to perform with him. On tour with Dillon, he performed in about 15 cities in the USA. He said that was how he learned the ropes as a stand up comedian.
Scouts for SNL saw him when he performed during an emerging comedians show, Just for Laughs in Montreal, Canada and asked him to audition and the rest is history.
