Most accused in Banco de Reservas robbery are under arrest

On 24 May 2024, seven men pulled off a daylight bank robbery of a branch office of the Reserve Bank (Banreservas) in Santiago de los Caballeros and left with an undisclosed amount of money.

But crime, especially one so spectacular, is not easily carried out in this country. The National Police in less than a week announced the capture and arrest of five of the seven men crew that robbed the bank. Some RD$1.5 million in cash has also said to have been recovered.

The five men, all with nicknames so common among the criminal element, included one Haitian.

According to National Police spokesman Diego Pesquiera, the identity of the two remaining suspects is known, and they have been asked to turn themselves into the authorities.

The police have recovered some of the weapons used in the assault.

Police sources have recently revealed that the two leaders of the robbery had been convicted of armed robbery of a financial institution back in 2013, and they were sentenced to five years of prison. Both men were released after just 26 months in jail.
