Sports tourism: Santo Domingo to host best regional men’s volleyball cup

Santo Domingo will host the 17th Panamerican Men’s Senior Volleyball Cup from 14 to 21 July 2024. Canada is the event’s defending champion.

The tournament is held shortly before the Paris Olympic Games when the volleyball tournaments are scheduled to run from 27 July to 11 August 2024.

The Palacio Ricardo (Gioriber) Arias will be the venue in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.

Twelve national teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela will compete with host Dominican Republic.

Rafael Villalona, president of the event’s organizing committee, highlighted the event reaffirms the positioning of the Dominican Republic as a growing destination for international sport events.

The event is dedicated to the Creating Olympic Dreams (Creso) sports foundation and its promoter Felipe Vicini for the continued support to elite sports over the past 15 years.

Alexis García, president of the Dominican Volleyball Federation (Fedovoli), spoke of the sustained improvement of men’s volleyball in the country. The team is now ranked 30th in the world.

Women’s volleyball runs on a public-private program, under sports promoter Cristobal Marte, and has been much more successful. The senior women’s team (Reinas del Caribe) is ranked in the top 10 of the world.
