The Dominican Republic has been elected to a seat on the Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) of the United Nations (UN) for the 2025-2027 period. The election was held on Friday, 7 June 2024 at the UN headquarters in New York, USA. This marks the Dominican Republic’s fourth time being elected to this position.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex) reported that the seat was obtained by acclamation, receiving the support of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) countries. This consensus also allowed Antigua and Barbuda and Mexico to obtain a seat on the body responsible for examining economic and social problems at the global level to take collective action.
“With its election, the Dominican Republic, as a founding member of the United Nations and a pioneer of multilateralism, reiterates its regional leadership and commitment to sustainable development in the economic, social, and environmental contexts,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
Through the Ministry of Economy, Planning, and Development (MEPyD), the Dominican Republic leads the region in the implementation of public policies for sustainable development, which favors the country’s commitments within the body that coordinates the work of the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
The Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) was established in 1965, through a revision of the United Nations Charter. It deals primarily with economic, social, cultural, and health issues, as well as human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is composed of 54 members, 18 of whom are elected each year by the UN General Assembly for a three-year term.
