Juan Carlos Iturregui’s US Senate hearing

The Dominican Republic is hoping the US will soon send an ambassador. Having an ambassador is a true enabler for bilateral relations.

In his words during the nomination review in the US Senate, Puerto Rican Juan Carlos Iturregui said:
“The US and the DR already enjoy a strong, growing and very close relationships. We share democratic values and desire for our countries and our region to be prosperous and safe. Our governments are working together on a wide variety of priorities. I am convinced these shared perspectives and democratic values will further strengthen our ties. We must continue our efforts to advocate for democracy, and human rights in our hemisphere, combat corruption, promote long-term economic growth, and enhance citizen security as we tackle the challenges of our times.

“Recently reelected President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader has made it clear as he listens to the Dominican people who are tired of corruption and want their government to do better for them. The US supports his efforts. If confirmed, I am eager to collaborate with the Dominican government in good governance issues, security, human rights, energy transition and improving the lives of people in the Dominican Republic. I have spent most of my life working in business and regulatory public policy issues. I know the importance of good governance to promote resilient development. In conclusion, if confirmed, I would promote US values in the Dominican Republic.“

In an editorial remarking on the advances in the naming of a US ambassador, Diario Libre observed that the interrogation in the Senate seemed to show that when considering the island affairs, Haiti is more on the minds of US legislators than the Dominican Republic.
