Banco Popular robbery: Two defendants sent to jail to await trial; one allowed to post bail

The Attorney General National District’s Permanent Attention Services Office issued a three-month pre-trial detention order at Najayo jail as a coercive measure against Jorge Luis Estrella Arias and Eddy Enmanuel Segura Arias in response to the request from the prosecutors.

Defendant Alberto Ezequiel Estrella Arias was granted a bail bond of RD$500,000 under contract and a ban on leaving the country as a coercive measure.

Jorge Luis Estrella Arias, Eddy Enmanuel Segura Arias, and Alberto Ezequiel Estrella Arias are accused of the robbery of the Banco Popular Dominicano branch located on Avenida Luperón, corner Olof Palme.

According to the files presented by the Department of Investigation of Crimes and Property Crimes (Theft), the defendants Jorge Luis Estrella Arias, Eddy Enmanuel Segura Arias, and Alberto Ezequiel Segura Arias partnered with the deceased Richard Michel Estrella Arias and Johan Belliard Aybar, alias Beberrá, to rob the financial institution, where they stole RD$1,685,723.68 on 3 June 2024.

The defendants are charged with criminal association, robbery with violence, and the use of an illegal weapon, in violation of articles 265, 266, 379, 382, and 385 of the Dominican Penal Code. As well as articles 66 and 67 of Law 631-16 for the Control and Regulation of Arms, Ammunition and Related Materials.

Defendant Alberto Ezequiel Estrella Arias is charged with violation of Law 631-16 for the Control and Regulation of Arms, Ammunition and Related Materials, which provides for imprisonment of 20 to 30 years for persons who form a criminal association and in which illegal firearms are used.

According to the file, the defendant Jorge Luis Estrella Arias allegedly participated actively in the execution of the robbery inside the bank branch. He subdued the victims, forcing the employees to hand over the money under threats.

While the defendant Eddy Enmanuel Segura Arias allegedly participated in the execution of the robbery, collaborating directly in the actions of intimidation and subjugation of the victims. He helped maintain control over the employees and customers of the branch during the robbery, facilitating the theft of the money and ensuring the escape of the perpetrators.

Likewise, the defendant Alberto Ezequiel Estrella Arias is indicated as the person responsible for renting the vehicle used in the robbery, providing false information and not signing the contract to avoid being identified. He maintained constant communication with the vehicle owner, coordinating the logistics before and after the robbery and would have suggested putting his deceased brother as responsible for renting the vehicle to divert the investigation.

The media report that the cash stolen is still missing. The Police deny knowing the whereabouts of the cash.
