In a significant move to bolster financial sector knowledge and expertise among the general public in the Dominican Republic, the Superintendency of Banks (SB) unveiled its Escuela SB (SB School) on Monday, 17 June 2024. The initiative is open to professionals, government officials and practically anyone with an interest in the covered topics.
The Superintendence of Banks invited representatives from 10 countries and other Dominican government institutions, including the Central Bank and the superintendences of Pensions, Securities, and Insurance to the launch of the new facilities. Free of charge classes are available in person and online. Terry Bennett Muckleroy, in charge of international training and technical assistance in the supervision and regulation division of the US Federal Reserve, came for the launch.
Superintendent of Banks Alejandro Fernandez Whipple has a long career as an educator. For years he served as private consultant, for his company Argentarium, and where he wrote extensively on the topic, educating the general public for free.
The Superintendence of Banks says the opening of the Escuela SB is a strategic approach to promote regulatory compliance and foster sound practices within the Dominican financial system. Classes are available in person, online and hybrid formats.
The curriculum will encompass a diverse range of topics, including financial education, financial entity supervision, regulation and innovation, management, and professional development. The new academic platform, the SB now gathers all the educational efforts that the Superintendence had been carrying out to promote regulatory compliance and good performance in the financial system.
“We are filled with enthusiasm as we embark on this project, recognizing the immense opportunity it presents to expand our contributions to the financial system, in this case through the training and continuous learning of its human capital,” said Fernández Whipple when speaking during the Escuela SB inauguration ceremony.
The Escuela SB launch took place during the “Course on Consolidated Supervision and Risk Integration” organized by the Association of Banking Supervisors of the Americas (ASBA) and the United States Federal Reserve Board, held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Santo Domingo.
