Government puts up first payment for Tetelo Vargas Stadium

The Ministry of the Presidency cut the check for RD$84 million to remodel the Tetelo Vargas Stadium, home club to the Estrellas Orientales baseball team in San Pedro de Macoris. The stadium is one of the three built by Dictator Rafael Trujillo’s favorite engineer, Bienvenido “Bebecito“ Martinez. The other two stadiums are the Estadio Cibao, in Santiago de los Caballeros and the Quisqueya in Santo Domingo. The Tetelo Vargas was the last of the three stadiums to be built by Trujillo, and it is, by far, the smallest.

The engineers commit to remodel and modernize the stadium in time for the 2024-2025 Dominican Winter League season that opens in late October. The remodeling is also spurred by the Dominican Baseball League (Lidom). The intention is to make going to the baseball stadium more attractive. The remodeling will also increase the Tetelo Vargas’ seating capacity. It will also improve conditions for players, with renovations to the locker rooms, among other changes.

Both the Estadio Cibao in Santiago and the Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo have already undergone major renovations over the years to accommodate more fans, improve lighting, and add seating and improved playing conditions on the field. La Romana (Francisco Micheli) and San Francisco de Macoris (Julian Javier) also have ballparks that are much more modern than the Tetelo Vargas.

The government has also provided some RD$12 million to improve and renovate three other amateur baseball fields in the southeastern San Pedro area.

The remodeling of the stadium will make including watching a baseball game more attractive for the thousands of tourists that stay in the San Pedro de Macoris Juan Dolio and Guayacanes beach resorts and vacation villas and accommodations.
