
Minister of Public Works Deligne Ascención was in Macau, China to represent the Dominican Republic at the 15th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) on 20 June 2024. The event was co-hosted by the China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) and Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). Ascención spoke about sustainable infrastructures at the event.
The government of China explains that the event is a key international platform to enhance infrastructure connectivity under the Belt and Road Initiative. According to Wikipedia, the Dominican Republic is a member of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The event is held as a platform for Chinese construction experts to share their knowledge, expertise and innovative solutions to international infrastructure projects, catalyze new growth in infrastructure partnerships between China and the countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, and foster consensus and insights for the sustainable development of the global infrastructure industry.
As reported, over 3,500 industry leaders from more than 70 countries attended, representing 800 organizations. Leading Chinese construction companies participated, including the China Communications Construction, China State Construction Engineering Group and China Railway Construction.
The theme in 2024 was that of “Green Innovative Digital Connectivity.” The speakers addressed the issues of energy transition, digital evolution, green investment, ESG management, digital integration of international engineering projects, dispute resolution, risk mitigation, and regional infrastructure connectivity.
Premier communications and equipment manufacturers exhibited their equipment, such as Huawei, Caterpillar, and LiuGong, representing the forefront of digital intelligence and green innovation technologies. Furthermore, the exhibition also features delegations of local companies organized by business authorities from several provinces, further enriching the diversity and depth of the exhibition.
Over the years, the event has catalyzed the development of more than 180 international infrastructure projects, with a combined contract value surpassing US$100 billion, says the forum press release.
The Dominican Republic established full diplomatic relations with China in May 2018. Recent reports are that exports are up 107.98% from 2020 to 2024 to China. A comparison of January-May 2020 exports to China were US$29.68 million and these increased to US$61.73 million for the same period in 2024. The DR exports medical instruments, tobacco and scrap metal to China.
On the occasion of the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the establishment of full diplomatic ties between the DR and the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Ambassador Chen Luning stated, as reported in Diario Libre, that bilateral trade was up 112%, and was more than US$4.8 billion in 2022.
