Spokespeople for the young emerging political party, Opción Democrática held a press conference to express concern that the much-touted fiscal reform is but motivated by a need for the government to compensate for the accumulated fiscal debasement created by the Abinader government itself.
Virginia Antares Rodriguez argued that the tax system must be redesigned to ensure that it contributes to greater equality of income and that it provides greater capacity so the government can guarantee benefits through the provision of quality goods and public services.
Former presidential candidate Virginia Antares Rodriguez said in a press release: “We see that the actual interest of the initiative is the aim of increasing public income more than in carrying out a structural reform of the tax system and of public spending.”
She said the technical teams of the Opción Democrática will be presenting comprehensive proposals for fiscal reform that foster fiscal justice as well.
“The reform must serve to make a better life for Dominicans, and this should be translated into simplifying taxation, reviewing incentive regimes, eliminating those that are unproductive or favor sectors that are not needed or that generate negative externalities, such as environmental contamination and labor precariousness,” said Rodriguez.
She spoke up against those who argue for a referendum. She said it is more important to review and improve public finances, tackle tax evasion, and seek efficient and transparent management of public resources. “The goal must be to incentivize sectors and companies to produce more, be green and sustainable, that there be more gender equality and an economy that ensures better working conditions for Dominican workers.
