Electricity demand reaches record highs

The onset of summer, combined with a large cloud of passing Saharan dust, have combined to drive up the heat indexes to new records. According to one report, the local demand for electricity reached over 3660 megawatts. As a result, there were rolling blackouts across many areas.

Of course, the fact that more and more persons have access to air conditioning is certainly one of the causes of these historic high demands. With over 3550 megawatts of demand on Wednesday, 26 June 2024, with the start of summer, was surpassed by the 3660 MW on the following Thursday and Friday.

Government sources praised the fact that 16% of the demand was covered by renewable energy sources, including solar, wind and biomass sources.

Sources at the Ministry of Mining and Energy (MEM) told reporters for the Listin Diario that electricity demand has increased by 10% over the past year, the first time this has happened. With new power stations going up in Boca Chica and Azua, the government plans to keep up with the growing demand.

So far, MEM sources say that between 98% and 100% of demand has been supplied.
