Why Serviamed is still a government supplier

María Terán de Bonetti / Somos Pueblo Media

Maria Isabel Teran de Bonetti has been in the media due to her company, Serviamed’s involvement in a corruption scandal known as the “Medusa Case”. She appears online as the president of Serviamed Dominicana SRL, a major supplier to the government.

As reported in the media, she reached an agreement with the Public Ministry to return RD$84,903,951.72 to the state, which corresponded to bribes she had admitted to tied to the Medusa case in which former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez is the main person charged.

As reported, despite her involvement in the Medusa corruption scandal, the Dominican Ministry of Housing (Miveh) has awarded Teran de Bonetti’s company Serviamed Dominicana S.R.L. new contracts worth over RD$2.6 billion for the acquisition and installation of medical equipment and furniture for the Padre Billini Teaching Hospital and San Vicente de Paul public hospital in San Francisco de Macoris.

This has raised questions about the transparency of the Miveh’s actions, as they have continued to grant contracts to a company linked to a corruption scandal.

The Procurement Agency explained that Serviamed has not been blocked as a state supplier because it was not convicted in court.

In 2022 Maria Isabel Teran and her husband were named to the board of the Padre Billini Hospital board, and would later resign after criticism for alleged corruption and apparent conflict of interests. President Luis Abinader would accept recommendations from then president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) Senen Caba and remove Maria Isabel Teran from the board. As reported, her husband José Miguel Bonetti Du-Breil was left on the board.
