Around 1,000 hotel rooms have opened this 2024 in the National District, the capital city of Santo Domingo. Diario Libre looks into the reasons for the boom in lodging capacity.
People coming to the city for business visits is the main reason, according to Yudit Garcia, president of the Santo Domingo Hotels Association. She is also the general manager at the JW Marriott, located on Av. Winston Churchill. She says people get to enjoy the cultural sights and the gastronomy.
The high-rise and corporate center of the city, the so-called Poligono Central where the hotels have opened has replaced the Malecon and the Mirador Park areas as the center for major hotels. Today, the new hotels are located on or off the Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill avenues. Malls and restaurants are also in the area that is lined with residential and short-term rental apartments, too.
García says that Santo Domingo has an urgent need for the construction of the convention and exhibitions hall announced by the government for the former Hotel Hispaniola site on the Malecon. She says the city will then be able to better compete for conventions.
