Journalist and documentary producer Jessica Hasbun received US President Joe Biden’s President’s Volunteer Service Award at a ceremony at the Dominican Senate on 2 July 2024. Hasbun was proposed for the presidential medal by New York Senator Luis R. Sepulveda. The award is given to US citizens and legal residents to honor their service and recognize the impact they make
During the event, Sepulveda also read the New York Senate bill 2023-J2574 that recognizes Hasbun for her documentary “Orgullo de Quisqueya” (Pride of Quisqueya). The resolution honors the inaugural projection of the documentary “Orgullo de Quisqueya” in New York in June 2024 at Lehman College and recognizes the film’s significant contributions to the Dominican community.

She has been carrying out several inspiring documentaries with her husband, TV producer Kelvin Liria. In addition to Orgullo de Quisqueya she has also carried out several documentaries on the difficult paths followed by Dominican elite athletes.
New York senator Sepulveda highlighted that her recent documentary series, Orgullo de Quisqueya (Pride of Quisqueya), promotes Dominican culture and inspires other Dominicans to do good. The documentary shows the dedication, challenges, sacrifices and hard work unfolded by Dominican migrants.
Jessica Hasbun explained that “Orgullo de Quisqueya,” reveals the resilience and greatness and transcendence of Dominican migrants.
Present for the ceremony at the Salon Polivalente of the National Senate was also the president of the Senate Ricardo de los Santos, Peravia senator Milciades Franjul and the former president of the Constitutional Court Milton Ray Guevara, among others. Attending were her parents, investigative journalist Alicia Ortega and her father Fernando Hasbun, president of the leading news service Noticias SIN, her husband Kelvin Liria and sister Dominique Hasbun.
