Experienced deputy Eugenio Cedeño (PRM-La Romana) overruled the first step of the ruling political party to discipline him after the sexist remarks he made to a radio and YouTube channel. He finagled back his voting rights in the Chamber of Deputies committee that is reviewing the Penal Code received from the Senate. It is that the openly controversial Cedeño knows the Penal Code inside and out as he has been a deputy for four terms and is about to start his fifth term.
As reported in Listin Diario, Eugenio Cedeño explained his participation was unanimously acclaimed by the coordinating committee led by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, alongside spokespersons from various political organizations.
Cedeño says he has been a constant in the committees discussing the Penal Code for almost 20 years. Cedeño has been in Congress since 2006.
Pacheco instructed the committee to accommodate recommendations from the Monday, 15 July 2024 public hearing and to implement changes to the Penal Code proposal based on over 50 observations from societal sectors in time for submitting a report by Wednesday, 17 July.
In the discussions, Cedeño has already proposed that Article 135 of the draft law concerning non-consensual sexual activity between partners should remove the terms “force, intimidation, threat, or coercion within a relationship,” asserting that the unhappy spouse can always request separation or divorce to end the relationship.
