Border patrol seizes 1.5 million units of smuggled cigarettes

The Dominican Republic’s Border Security Corps (CESFronT) has handed over 1.5 million units of confiscated cigarettes to the Specialized Corps for the Control of Fuels and Merchandise (CECCOM). The seizure is part of a regular monthly process that aims to curb illegal cross-border trade.

The press release attributes the successful operation to the tireless efforts of CESFronT’s Intelligence Department (C-2) and the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces personnel stationed at the border checkpoints.

The confiscated cigarettes include 1,452,000 units of the Capital brand, 38,000 units of Camme Il Faut, and 10,000 units of Point. In addition to the cigarettes, CESFronT also delivered 6,919 alcoholic beverages, 115 gallons of clerén (moonshine), and 120,440 units of medications to CECCOM.

CESFronT reports are that since mid-October 2023, these joint operations have resulted in the confiscation of approximately 8,828,030 units of cigarettes and around 67,542 bottles of alcoholic beverages. This marks the sixth delivery of confiscated goods this year.

The merchandise handed over by CESFronT to CECCOM is estimated to have a value of around RD$20 million.
