Spotlight on Alondra Tapia and the Reinas del Caribe in the Paris Olympics

She learned the sport playing in the capital city. The natural talents of Alondra Tapia were recognized early and she won a scholarship to train in Japan for three years to achieve her goal of joining the Reinas del Caribe, the senior Dominican women’s volleyball team that is ranked 11th in the world.

She left for Japan when she was 14 years and returned when she was 18 years old. She said she brought back the respect for discipline in life and the game and hard work and an attitude to learn and get better all the time.

In a podcast with former Reinas del Caribe team captain Priscilla Rivera, Tapia said she is proud of what she has achieved so far. She says she is not rushed and is at work on meeting her objectives. But she admits making the Olympic team in 2024 was a shock.

Alondra Tapia is getting press attention as sports coverage on the Olympics picks up pace with the Paris Games around the corner.

The Dominican Republic is one of 12 teams to play in the women’s volleyball tournament in the Paris Olympics. The DR opens with a first game against Italy on 28 July 2024.

The group breakdown for the Paris volleyball championship and FIVB ranking is as follows:

Pool B: Brazil (1), Poland (4), Japan (7), Kenya (20)
