
Diario Libre is looking into the evolution of the growth in government. The number of government departments in the Dominican Republic has grown from four when the country was founded in 1844 to 23 at present. The original cabinet positions were Justice and Public Instruction, Interior and Police, Hacienda and Trade, and War and Navy, Diario Libre explains in a new series on burgeoning bureaucracy. The series is on the heels of expected government proposals for more taxes to fund the humongous fiscal spending.
The boom in government departments mostly happened after 1980, with each change of government adding more and more departments for more and more jobs.
