The Ministry of Foreign Relations reported that as of 22 July 2024, 14 heads of state and/or government and one vice president have confirmed their participation in the swearing-in ceremony of President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña for the 2024-2028 constitutional term scheduled for 16 August 2024. The announcement is made as a follow-up of remarks made by President Luis Abinader during the La Semanal press conference. The President said that his and Vice President Raquel Peña’s swearing-in ceremony was being passed to the National Theater to accommodate more special guests.
The large number of heads of state who have confirmed their coming for the inaugural reflects on the new leadership role President Luis Abinader has achieved in the region.
Traditionally, foreign diplomats are invited to the General Assembly hall at Congress for the event. The Presidency determined that this 2024 more seats were needed than those available at the congressional hall and thus the change of venue.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations says that the list of confirmed VIPs includes King Felipe VI of Spain; Presidents Xiomara Castro Sarmiento of Honduras, Rodrigo Chaves Robles of Costa Rica, Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, Santiago Peña Palacios of Paraguay, José Raúl Mulino Quintero of Panama, Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala, Chandrikapersad Santokhi of Suriname, General Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau, Mohamed Irfaan Ali of Guyana, Gustavo Petro Urrego of Colombia, and Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay.
Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that Governor General Rodney Williams of Antigua and Barbuda, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Investments, and Immigration John Briceño of Belize, and Vice President Félix Ulloa of El Salvador have also confirmed their participation.
The institution anticipates that as the 16 August date approaches, more heads of state, delegation leaders, secretaries-general of international organizations, special guests, and other dignitaries will continue to confirm their participation in this solemn event.
