First days of the Dominican Republic at Paris 2024

Critian Pinales / COLIMDO

The Dominican Republic has made a promising start at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Boxer Cristian Javier Pinales defeated his Thai opponent Jongjoho Weerapon (0-5) to secure a spot in the round of 16. His next match is scheduled for this Tuesday, 30 July.

The Dominican men’s football team, ranked 150th by FIFA, played its second game in an Olympic Games against Spain and turned in a 3-1 loss. Spain is ranked 3rd in the world by the soccer ruling body. The DR in its debut game in an Olympic Games had tied with Egypt (61st) 0-0. The DR will now play Uzbekistan on 30 July. A win against that team would give the DR a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Gymnast Audrys Nin Reyes, the Dominican flag bearer, competed in artistic gymnastics on 27 July yet failed to move on to a second round in his respective events.

In volleyball, the Dominican Republic senior women’s team (ranked 11th in the wolrd) lost in four sets (25-10, 24-27, 25-21, 25-19) to Italy (ranked second in the world). The bad news, nevertheless, was that key player Lisvel Eve Mejía (la China), tested positive to a doping test. This removes her from the Olympic Games.

The Dominican Republic has officially registered a team of 57 athletes across 13 sports to compete in the 33rd Olympic Games, scheduled for July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France.
