Senator Faride Raful named Minister of Interior and Police

President Luis Abinader is entrusting 44-year old National District senator Faride Virginia Raful Soriano with one of the toughest jobs in the country. She is appointed Minister of Interior & Police as of the start of Abinader’s second term in government, on 16 August 2024. Her term as a senator ends on 16 August.

In 2021, as a senator, Faride Raful had stated that the National Police should be started from scratch, Listin Diario recalls.

Raful is a former deputy in Congress (PRM 2016-2020). She is also well known in her role as co-host of the Esta Noche con Mariasela TV variety program. She is a lawyer and now will be the first woman to hold the key cabinet position in the Dominican Republic.

She studied Law at the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra and earned a master’s degree in Telecommunications and Information Technology Law from Carlos III University of Madrid. She also completed a postgraduate program in Information Law at the University of Salamanca and specialized in Copyright and Related Rights at the University of the Andes in Mérida, Venezuela.

The Ministry of Interior and Police deals with the police and security in the Dominican Republic. Diario Libre editorial says Raful has been handed “a hot potato.”

The same Decree 420-24 sends current Minister of Interior & Police Jesus (Chu) Vasquez to be the Dominican consul in New York City. Vasquez had been in the position since 16 August 2020.

The current general consul in NYC, Eligio Antonio Jaquez Cruz is appointed agricultural affairs advisor to the President. He had been general consul since 16 August 2020.
