The Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium, the centerpiece of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in the middle of the National District, will be getting a billion-peso makeover. The facility was built in time for the XII Central American and Caribbean Games in 1974.
The venue has served as the scenario for major concerts, and sporting events, including the visit by Pele and the New York Cosmos soccer team.
Now, the stadium will get more seats, 24,500, and improved facilities for athletes and visitors alike.
The main reason for this huge investment, currently well underway, is the fact that the Dominican Republic will play host to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, a major event on the world soccer calendar. These are the teams that will be in the Olympics and the World Cups in the coming years.
According to the people in charge of the remodeling, the project is about 70% completed overall, and it will be delivered at the end of September.
