Mastercard brings Apple Pay to the Dominican Republic

Mastercard announced on 6 August 2024 that Apple Pay is now available to its cardholders in the Dominican Republic. This secure, convenient, and private payment method allows consumers to make purchases without handing over their physical card, touching buttons, or exchanging cash. Apple Pay leverages the power of the iPhone to safeguard every transaction.

Dominican Republic cardholders from Banreservas, Banco BHD, Banco Popular Dominicano, and Qik Banco Digital Dominicano can now add their Mastercard credit or debit cards to Apple Pay. To make a payment, users simply double-click the side button and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless reader. Each Apple Pay purchase is authenticated using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, along with a unique dynamic security code.

Apple Pay can be used at any establishment that accepts contactless payments, including supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, cafes, gas stations, convenience stores, cable cars, shopping malls, and many more.

Setting up Apple Pay is simple. On an iPhone, just open the Wallet app, tap the “+” button, and follow the steps to add Mastercard credit or debit cards. Once a card is added to an iPhone or Apple Watch, it can be used immediately. Cardholders will continue to receive all the rewards and benefits offered by their Mastercard.

The service enhances security and privacy of users. When using a credit or debit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device or on Apple servers. Instead, a unique device account number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, a certified industry-standard chip designed to securely store payment information on the device.
