Panama’s President suggests summit meeting in DR

President José Raúl Mulino / Diario Libre

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino has suggested that since many heads of state of Latin American nations will be in attendance at the inauguration of Luis Abinader’s second term next Friday, 16 August 2024, it might be a good idea to hold a summit conference to talk about the situation in Venezuela, where election results apparently are not what the government says they are.

President Mulino told reporters that he was trying to bring together several Presidents in Panama, but since most of them will be in Santo Domingo this Thursday and Friday (15 and 16 August 2024) for the Abinader inaugural, it makes sense to hold the meeting in the Dominican Republic.

The President of Panama said that he wanted to bring together the 17 nations that voted on 31 July in the Organization of American States (OAS) in favor of a resolution that asked the Venezuelan authorities to “immediately” publish the reports from each polling station.

After years of participating as part of the System of Central American Integration (SICA) regional block, the Dominican Republic fostered creating the Alliance for Development in Democracy together with Panama and Costa Rica, setting distance from other SICA region countries.
