For years, elite Dominican athletes have been able to continue in sports under the tutelage of the military. As military recruits, they are paid somewhat minimum wages to practice their sport, but this is significant for many.
On 14 August 2024, the Air Force announced it was promoting several elite athletes, including the country’s three Paris Olympic medalists.
Gold medalist Marileidy Paulino was elevated to the rank of first lieutenant. Boxers Cristina Pinales and Yunior Alcántara, who won bronze medals at the Games, were promoted to the rank of second lieutenant.
Additionally, Olympic athletes runners Anabel Medina Ventura, Alexander Ogando Bautista, and gymnast Audrys Nin Reyes were promoted to the rank of master sergeant, acknowledging their commitment and discipline.
Furthermore, sprinter José González Soto, athlete Franchina Martínez Caraballo (400 meter hurdles and 400 m), and Robert King (400m) were promoted to the rank of sergeant.
