Who’s coming for the presidential inaugural? US sends energy chief; China sends its big data head

The Dominican Republic seeks to advance on its national and regional agenda with networking with the heads of government and state and special envoys coming for the inaugural of the second term of President Luis Abinader.

Among the early arrivals, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas of Curacao, who heads the delegation of Netherlands at the inaugural, held a bilateral meeting with President Abinader, the Presidency reported. He came early as did President Chandrikapersad Santokhi of Suriname, who was the first to arrive on Tuesday, 13 August 2024. The Vice President of Salvador Felix Ulloa, the Prime Minister John Briceño of Belize arrived on Wednesday for the inaugural.

The US is sending Jennifer M. Granholm, Secretary of the US Department of Energy as head of the inaugural delegation. Other members of the US presidential delegation are:

Tom Perez, Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to the President and Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, The White House

Chris Dodd, Special Presidential Advisor for the Americas, U.S. Department of State
Daniel P. Erikson, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere, National Security Council, The White House

After the US announced on 2 August its delegation to the inaugural, China followed with an announcement on 13 August 2024. President Xi Ping of China is sending Special Envoy Jin Zhuanglong. Zhuanglong is a long-time Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The MIIT oversees sectors including the Internet, 5G, artificial intelligence, new energy vehicles, big data and other technology industries.

Several celebrities are also here for the inaugural, including baseball’s Alex Rodriguez, who met with President Luis Abinader at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, 14 August.
